Overview

Blue Bikes (formally know as Hubway) is the metro Boston area’s bike share program, with more than 1,600 bikes at over 160 stations throughout Cambridge, Boston, Brookline, and Somerville. Blue Bikes is an essential part of Cambridge’s sustainable transportation network. We care about the membership in Blue Bikes because it lets us know how many of our community members are interested in having access to a bike, one they do not have to store or maintain, at any time. More bikes on the road means less cars on the road, which means improvements in air quality, traffic congestion, and road safety.

Cambridge has established a goal for 100% of residents and employees to be located within 1/4 mile of a Hubway station.

Annual Hubway Members from Cambridge

As you can see from this chart, membership in Blue Bike among Cambridge residents has increased year over year since 2013. It helps that Blue Bike operates year round, however as you might expect, Spring and Summer sign ups are the most common.

What This Chart Shows Us

This pie chart shows the active annual Blue Bikes memberships in each of the four primary cities and other. There are two kinds of Blue Bikes memberships, annual and monthly. For both cases, but shown here for annual memberships only, the majority of memberships are coming from those that do not live in Cambridge or other core Blue Bikes cities, but most likely from people that work in these cities. Regardless, Cambridge still has a high proportion of the memberships.
